Lightning Protection
Tree Specialists has found that lightning damage to trees in areas that regularly experience electrical storms is not uncommon. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that large trees within 10 feet of structures, are taller than the structure, or have limbs extending over the structure should have a lightning protection system installed. These systems not only protect the tree, they also reduce the chances of damage to the structure itself. The total current in an average lightning strike is usually between 20,000 and 50,000 amps at about 100,000 volts! This amount of power can damage home appliances, wiring, and in some cases start a fire. The cost of a lightning protection system is reasonable, especially when compared to the potential cost of damage caused by lightning strikes to a home or business.
