Tree Care Services
An
important concept for property owners and managers to understand
is the difference between tree health and
tree structure.
Tree health describes the ability of the tree’s circulatory
system to absorb water and nutrients, and to produce a
full foliar canopy. Our Plant Health Care department
focuses on this aspect of tree care, and offers a wide
range of services to improve growing conditions for your
trees and shrubs.
Tree structure refers
to the condition of the woody framework of the plant including
roots, trunk and branches. It is possible — and in fact
quite common — to have a tree with severe structural defects
that is still able to produce a full foliar canopy. These
trees appear “healthy” to
the casual observer, but physical defects weaken plant architecture,
and can lead to a structural failure. Targeted pruning and bracing treatments
help stabilize tree structure, preserving the plant and reducing
the risk of property damage.
Another aspect of
structural care is size management. Many woody plants have
the potential to outgrow their allotted space in the landscape,
and can begin to have negative impacts on the property
as a whole. Excessive shade can rot the woodwork on structures,
and weaken understory plantings of shrubs, flowers, and
turf. Again, targeted
pruning treatments can help reduce plant size and increase
light penetration through the canopy.
