Tree pruning is the most common structural tree care practice performed by Tree Specialists. We take great care to evaluate the needs of each specimen individually and apply the proper technique to achieve the desired objective.
Properly pruned trees are more attractive and structurally stable, better able to withstand the ravages of our stormy New England weather. All of Tree Specialists tree pruning services are based on the ANSI A300 Pruning Standards, recognized by professional arborists nationwide.

The intent of crown cleaning is to reduce dead, dying, or poorly-formed limbs within the canopy. This will help the tree be able to use its energy to regrow healthily and will restore balance to the structure of the tree. It can also help stop diseases from spreading from one part of the tree to another. You may know you need crown cleaning if you notice dead, damaged, or diseased branches or if the canopy has begun blocking the sunlight beneath the tree.
It is recommended to get crown cleaning on your tree at every least three-to-five years, but you may need it more often if you notice any of the above indicators.
Crown reduction also carefully removes branches from the top of the tree, but with a slightly different purpose. We suggest crown reduction for reducing the physical size and weight of individual limbs or the entire canopy. With crown reduction, we hope to achieve a lighter, less dense canopy that has a lower likelihood of damage from strong winds in the future. We try to keep the tree’s natural shape, unlike with tree topping that removes an entire upper portion of the tree. Pruning meticulously will let the tree continue to grow in its natural pattern going forward.
Crown thinning focuses on the inner branches of the top portion of the tree to improve light and air flow through the canopy. With this method, we are focused on removing branches strategically to achieve that goal. The better the air flow, the less risk of damage from storms and other diseases. More light reaching the ground also ensures that the environment below your tree is thriving, as well.
Crown raising is especially helpful for providing clearance over buildings, sidewalks, paths, driveways, or understory plantings. It involves getting rid of branches on the lower part of the tree. With crown raising, the canopy will be untouched. Other than its logistical benefits, it can also improve a tree’s appearance.
Specialty pruning is often called tree trimming, and its goal is to achieve a desired shape and form. The difference between tree trimming and tree pruning is that tree trimming is largely focused on the aesthetics of the tree, while tree pruning is dedicated to preserving the tree’s health. Artistic or specialty pruning shares some of the benefits of other types of tree pruning, including increased airflow and light penetration as well as lower susceptibility to storm damage.
